United Methodist woman opens center to clean up the environment, empower members of her South African community.

When Angella Patricia Current-Felder was born, her father suggested naming her after the American abolitionist. “That started me on my path,” she said. “I have been trying to be Sojourner Truth all my life.”

The United Methodist Church, with support from Global Ministries’ Global Health unit, is implementing a joint emergency-response plan against measles in Congo. The strategy includes community engagement, surveillance, vaccinations and case management in health facilities.

Early last year, church leaders projected a shelter in Apaxco, Mexico, would assist between 100 and 150 migrants per month. By December, the shelter was housing 150 people a night and feeding 600 a day.
