Parsons and Miller look back at resource that supports and nurtures ruling elders

March 20, 2024

Mari Evans | Office of the General Assembly

"When I encounter healthy congregations of any size, I meet ruling elders who understand that their call is not to be on a board of directors but to be spiritual leaders along with the minister," reflected the Rev. Gradye Parsons, who served as Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) from 2008 to 2016. "Spiritual leaders tend to want to learn how to be more effective and faithful."

This apt observation comes on the heels of the 10th anniversary of the Regarding Ruling Elders resource series, which was created while Parsons was stated clerk.

Sara Hayden, host of the New Way podcast, explains in her introduction to a two-episode interview with the Rev. Troy Bronsink, founder of The Hive, a center for contemplation, art and action.

Responding to God’s Activity in the World through Service to Others

March 15, 2024

Marissa Galván-Valle

If one were to inquire of an Artificial Intelligence tool, "What is God's activity in the world?", it would respond by acknowledging the complexity of the topic and suggesting approaches from biblical, theological, and experiential perspectives. Ultimately, the AI would conclude that God's activity in the world remains a mystery that transcends human understanding.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to pay attention to God's activity in the world when serving others. What God does, we are called to do. Therefore, it is vital for ruling elders and the churches they lead to comprehend God's character and activity and then discern God's will for the world.
