"If 105 is not too old to serve the church, what's your
excuse? I wish we had more people like her calling up and asking
what they
can do." â The Rev. Mike Macdonald
talking about church member Jean Christy, who calls
parishioners to wish them a happy birthday.
105-year-old leads hospitality ministry
ANDREWS, N.C. (UMNS) â Jean Christy felt she was not doing enough
for her
church, so she called her pastor and asked how she might
volunteer. She was
a mere 104 at the time. Christy suggested she might use her
telephone skills
to cheer up her fellow Christians, and her pastor agreed. Since
March,
Christy has been the "birthday ambassador" for Andrews United
Methodist
Church.

At 75, Upper Room enriches spiritual walk
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â Randy, 45, was in prison for the second
time.
Struggling with addiction since his teens, he had stolen to buy
drugs. Randy
planned to hang himself from the sprinkler system at lockdown.
But, somehow,
he found - and opened - a copy of The Upper Room daily devotional
guide. For
75 years, The Upper Room daily devotional guide has offered hope
and
inspiration to believers and seekers alike.

to take the
church's message into the world and be advocates for change, a

said. Freddy Bermudez Jr., a college student and member of San

Agency offers resources for Grandparents Day
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â Grandparents Day, the first Sunday after
Labor
Day, is an opportunity to honor both biological grandparents and the
elders
who offer compassion, concern, wisdom and generosity. According to
research
reported by the United Methodist Board of Discipleship, children who
have at
least five caring adults in their lives, in addition to their
parents, are
more likely to thrive and less likely to become "at risk." The
Board of
Discipleship has worship resources for congregations to recognize
the
"grandmas" and "grandpas" who love and [19]share their faith.
