>Episcopal schools yearly celebration underway
[ENS] More than 1,000 Episcopal schools in the United States, Caribbean,
Central America and the Pacific Basin, are in the midst of a week-long
celebration of their ministry.
Sponsored by the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES),
Episcopal Schools Celebration (ESC) is the annual celebration of the
ministry of Episcopal schools, Early Childhood Education programs,
school establishment committees, and their sponsoring institutions,
throughout the Episcopal Church. "Whether at a school, parish,
cathedral, diocesan-wide service or event, ECS is the time for giving
thanks and proclaiming to the Church and the world the good news that is
the ministry of Episcopal schools," says an announcement on the NAES
website.
Each year, the gathering highlights a different aspect of Episcopal
school identity and mission through the event's theme, which this year
is "Last of All and Servant of All (Mark 9:35)".

>Bookshops open windows on new worlds
>By Patricia Colby Nakamura
[Episcopal Life] When is a bookshop more than a bookshop?
When it is a gathering place, a ministry, an informal counseling center,
a showcase for local talent, an urban sanctuary, a small theater and
sometimes the pathway into Narnia.
Any bookstore serves as an entrance into new worlds, but Episcopal
bookstores also are extensions of the church.

"Orthodox and Modern: Studies in the Theology of Karl Barth" from Baker
Publishing Group, by Bruce L. McCormack, 317 pages, paperback, c. 2008,
$32.99
[Baker Publishing Group] Almost 50 years after his death, Karl Barth
remains one of the most influential theologians of the last century. Of
late, much has been written attempting to reassess his philosophical
assumptions and theology from the perspectives of Anglo-American
postmodernism and post-liberalism. In this intriguing volume, Bruce
McCormack presents critical chapters that challenge the prevailing
trends and focus on Barth as a modern yet orthodox figure.
As he notes in his introduction, McCormack self-consciously reads Barth
from a Continental perspective, and his essays will likely be
controversial in their challenge to contemporary American perspectives.
The first two sections of his study provide context for reading Barth in
relation to nineteenth-century German theology and engage recent
postmodern and post-liberal views. The third section focuses more
particularly on an aspect that McCormack believes is critically
important in the contemporary setting -- Barth's theological ontology.
The final section gathers together occasional writings that survey
several issues of continuing concern.
This collection will be of great interest to those who already have some
knowledge of Karl Barth's theology, but it will also provide serious
readers with an approachable and thoughtful account of several areas of
critical concern for contemporary theology.
