ARCHBISHOP DEMETRIOS MEETS WITH UNDERSECRETARY FOR
POLITICAL AFFAIRS NICHOLAS BURNS AT THE STATE DEPARTMENT

NEW YORK - His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America met with
Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns at the State
Department on Friday, July 25th, 2005.	The meeting, which was initiated by
the Archbishop, was a follow-up to an open invitation which Mr. Burns had
extended in the past.

During the meeting, which lasted a little over an hour, there was a cordial
and direct exchange of ideas on the issue of the Former Yugoslav Republic
of Macedonia, on the issue of Cyprus and on the issues of concern to the
Ecumenical Patriarchate including the re-opening of the Theological School
of Halki.

Archbishop Demetrios, following the meeting, stated:
"Mr. Burns was very receptive and expressed his willingness to support the
ongoing effort in finding satisfactory solutions to the existing problems.
The issues we addressed are the pending issues of concern to the Omogeneia
for which both the clergy and the laity of our Holy Archdiocese remain
vigilant."
